Civil Rights

Government Constitution and Flag What Are Civil Rights?

In general terms, civil rights are constitutional and government created rights that are enforced through congressional legislation, such as the Federal Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Americans With Disabilities Act.  The terms of these important laws offer citizens certain basic protections, such as the protection against arbitrary treatment or discrimination at the hands of those in authority on the basis of race, religion, gender, age, disability, or national origin. Such civil rights violations commonly occur in matters of employment, housing, and public accommodations (access to private businesses).

In addition to discrimination in the private sector, federal and state civil rights laws offer protection against the violation of constitutional rights by federal, state, and local officials; such as police officers, prison guards, and municipalities.  The most common of these violations include acts of excessive force by police officers and the cruel or inhumane treatment of prisoners.

A violation of any of these principles in the treatment of any person is said to be a violation of that person’s civil rights.  Such civil rights violations commonly occur in matters of employment, housing, public accommodations, voting and political rights. Ordinarily, the victim is entitled to bring a cause of action and to seek relief against the violator.  That is where my law firm comes in.

Helping People Defend Their Civil Rights

Have you or a loved one been the victim of discrimination?  If you have, the Law Office of Stephen Borgo, in Pasadena, California, can help.  I, Lawyer Stephen Borgo, represent clients who have had their civil rights violated and those who have suffered discrimination. I counsel clients throughout the Southern California area.

As an attorney with a disability, I have personally experienced discrimination and have first-hand knowledge of what it means and how it feels to be treated differently (usually worse) compared to others.  I bring that personal understanding and empathy with me to my work, and I know how to obtain positive results for my clients.  As a lawyer, I believe in having a personal feel for my clients and I show them that what has happened to them is unacceptable and that I will fight for them.

If you believe your civil rights are being violated, or if you feel you are the victim of illegal discrimination in any public situation, including employment, housing, or public services, contact me today for a free initial consultation.
