What Are Civil Rights? In general terms, civil rights are constitutional and government created rights that are enforced through congressional legislation, such as the Federal Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Americans With Disabilities Act. The terms of these important laws offer citizens certain basic protections, such as the protection against arbitrary treatment or discrimination at the hands of those in authority on the basis of race, religion, gender, age, disability, or national origin. Such civil rights violations commonly occur in matters of employment, housing, and public accommodations (access to private businesses).
In addition to discrimination in the private sector, federal and state civil rights laws offer protection against the violation of constitutional rights by federal, state, and local officials; such as police officers, prison guards, and municipalities. The most common of these violations include acts of excessive force by police officers and the cruel or inhumane treatment of prisoners.
A violation of any of these principles in the treatment of any person is said to be a violation of that person’s civil rights. Such civil rights violations commonly occur in matters of employment, housing, public accommodations, voting and political rights. Ordinarily, the victim is entitled to bring a cause of action and to seek relief against the violator. That is where my law firm comes in.
